Indirect Bonding in Simpsonville, SC

What is "Indirect Bonding" and why does River Falls Orthodontics use it?

Traditionally, braces have been placed on the teeth by directly placing them one at a time. This meticulous process is widely accepted, and at times is necessary, but it requires the patient to be in retractors for 30 minutes or more in order to keep the teeth dry while the orthodontist places the braces.   This can be uncomfortable for the patient, and it can be difficult for the orthodontist at times to get the bracket in the correct position, especially in the back of the mouth. For younger patients, it can be difficult for them to hold still for an extended period of time, making it even more difficult for the orthodontist and more uncomfortable for the patient.

Dr. Fox & Dr. Wenderoth use a technique to place braces known as “Indirect Bonding” for many of their patients.  With this process, accurate molds of the teeth are fabricated in just a few moments, and the rest of the work is done here in our laboratory. When you return to the office a few days later, your braces are already positioned in accurate, personalized trays made just for you, and all of the braces are placed quickly and all at one time. The uncomfortable retractors that are needed to keep your teeth dry are only in place for as little as 10 minutes. This method is more accurate than traditional bracket placement, because the braces are first accurately placed on a model of the teeth, and then a custom tray is fabricated to transfer them to the patient’s mouth in just a few minutes.

This process works by using the molds of your teeth to make stone models of them. Once our laboratory technician has the models, Dr. Fox or Dr. Wenderoth can put the braces in the most ideal position and take as much time as necessary to put them in the ideal place. It is just as easy to place them on the back teeth as it is the front teeth, and instruments can be used to ensure accuracy of the brace on every tooth. Once this is done, custom trays are made and trimmed so they are easy and comfortable to place, and they are then cleaned and sterilized prior to your appointment. Patients are often amazed at how quickly and easily braces can be placed with this method.  It isn’t widely used in the profession because of the time, expense, and technique sensitivity of the process, but over the last few years, River Falls Orthodontics has incorporated it our practice, making it a predictable, comfortable procedure.
